„Melodic, catchy, and energetic“ - Rames im Interview

Rames live

When did you form your band RAMES? What inspired you to make music together?
Alan: We’re a very new band - we only formed about mid September, so only a few weeks ago really. I reckon more than anything, we were driven by our similar music taste. We all love the Indie pop genre and we just wanted to find the right group of people to express this. We all get on great as mates and it just felt right to start this new project and we’re excited to see where it can go.

How would you describe your music?
Alan: I reckon to sum up our music in 3 words: Melodic, catchy, and energetic. We write our songs to be feel-good indie pop tunes.

Your Song Every Time is pretty nice and you don’t sound like you in your twenties, that’s amazing. Who are you inspired by?
Alan: We’re inspired by so many people/things. I think it’s fair to say that a lot of the subjects of our songs are not too far fetched or obscure ie they’re just about girls. Not in a lovey dovey way but more in the sense that we like to write about what people our age are going through ie relationship issues, not having enough money to fund Friday nights etc. We want to write songs that our fans will be able to relate to.

What are your musical influences? Could you name your 5 favourite artist and bands?
Alan: I know that we all like such a variety of genres and artists/bands that’s it’s hard to pick just 5. I think growing up listening to the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Oasis definitely shaped our music taste. But more recently we all share a love of upcoming indie bands such as The Night Cafe, Pale Waves, and SPINN.

What is special about the song Every Time?
Alan: The song Every Time we feel is quite a catchy, melodic song that we felt captured our sound well, so we thought it would be perfect to release as our first single as a sort of an introduction to RAMES. It has certain elements of a pop song but it’s mixed with a sort of chorussy indie sound that is current and fresh. A lot of people we’ve spoken to have said that the song sticks in their heads which is always a good thing!

Please explain your creative process.
Alan: The writing process is not a complex one. Although we are a relatively new band, Alan (lead vocals) and Oli (lead guitarist) have been close mates for years and been in a previous band together. They’ve been writing songs together for a while and that familiarity and musical understanding has helped a lot when it comes to penning down new tracks for RAMES. The rest of the band then adds their creative input to make the songs what they are. We are all constantly bouncing ideas off each other and sending through song ideas that there’s hardly ever a set way of writing the songs. It’s just whatever feels right and sounds good!

What is your favourite part about this line of work? Your least favourite? Why?
Alan: We all love being in a band and I think the best thing about this line of work is being able to do something that you love and that you’re passionate about. It’s great to be able to share your music with other people to enjoy. We love gigging and performing live and I reckon if there’s one thing that we don’t really like, it’s the promotion/gig companies that don’t support upcoming bands and focus on profit with things like “pay to play” gigs etc. It’s also a shame that there have been quite a few gig venues being closed down in recent years. We think it’s important to give musicians a platform to express themselves and perform live and it’s vital that we keep supporting live music!

What makes this kind of music "good" to you?
Alan: We feel that this genre of music is so inclusive and relatable. We have a lot of mates who’s main genre of music isn’t indie and their taste may be more mainstream based or other genres. But when we show them our tracks they like the songs even though it’s not what they would usually listen to (that’s what they tell us anyway!). Although it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we like the idea that indie music is such a broad genre and accessible to such a large number of people and can get you dancing or improve your mood or whatever you need.

What are your plans maybe for the rest of the year and 2019, any writing or concerts going on?
Alan: We’re just getting started and Every Time is just the beginning of exciting things to come. We’re going to keep focusing on writing, recording and playing gigs and festivals. We plan to release more singles over the next few months and hope to release our debut EP in 2019.

What are your goals? Do you want to play at Glastonbury one day or are your ambitions more modest?
Alan: Of course it’s every band‘s dream to play Glastonbury! We feel we are quite ambitious and want to get out of the blocks fast. But at the same time we know it’s still very early days for us and that we’ve got a long way to go! As far as short term goals go we plan to keep releasing music and building our fanbase through social media, gigs, interviews etc. But we’ll keep putting the graft in and in a few years we’ll deffo be on that Pyramid stage!

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
Alan: Our advice for people who want to start their own bands would be to just go for it and to enjoy it. Music is something that we love to do and even if it was just a hobby it’s still something we’d be doing. I reckon you just need to find a good group of people that you get along with on a friendship level and a musical level and the songs will just come naturally. Remember to enjoy every moment of the journey too.

Any last words?
Alan: We want to say thank you to Indie’s Finest for taking the time to chat to us, we really appreciate it. Be sure to keep an eye out for more from us in the near future!
